Doors are a functional and interactive object that can be used to add an extra layer of security in your space or serve simply as a decorative design element.
You can place doors in your space that:
- Anyone can open and close
- Require someone to be a Member to open
- Require a password in order to open
This article will explain how to place each type of door in your space and best practices for each.
In order to add interactive doors to your space, you'll need to have access to the Mapmaker.
Once you place a door, you need to open and close it once before the Impassable Tiles will be placed on it. (Which prevents people from walking through before interacting with the door.)
Add a Basic Door
Basic Doors can be opened and closed by anyone in the space. They're most often used as a visual queue to show when a meeting is a "closed door" conversation or open for people to join.
To add a basic door to your space, follow these steps or keep reading for more detailed instructions:
- Enable the Door Extension from the Mapmaker
- Open the Object Picker and select the Door Extension category
- Choose the Door you want to use and place it in your space
- Anyone will be able to open or close it by pressing 'x'
Enable the Door Extension from the Mapmaker
To do this, open the Mapmaker, click the hamburger menu in the top left, and click Extension Settings.
Find the Doors Extension, and then click Activate Extension and then Apply Changes.
Open the Object Picker and select the Door Extension category
Select Objects in the top navigation, and then choose More Objects from the sidebar on the right to open the Object Picker.
From here, scroll down the left side until you see the Extensions at the bottom, signaled with a puzzle piece icon. Select Doors to display the variety of basics doors you can place in your office.
Choose the Door you want to use and place it in your space
We recommend placing the door in a doorway. Click Save in the Mapmaker.
Anyone will be able to open or close the door by pressing 'x'
After you place your new door, you can test it in your space.
The Impassable Tiles (which prevent people from walking through the door before interacting with it) will start to after the first time you open and close the door.
Add a Members-Only Door
You guessed it...Members-Only Doors can only be opened by Members of your space!
This is a great door option to place in the lobby of your office. Then if Guests come into your space, they'll need a Member to open the door for them before they're able to access the inside of your office.
To add a Members-Only Door to your space, follow these steps or keep reading for more detailed instructions:
- Enable the Member-Only Doors Extension from the Mapmaker
- Open the Object Picker and select the Member-Only Doors Extension category
- Choose the Door you want to use and place it in your space

Members will be able to open or close the door by pressing 'x'
After you place your new door, you can test it in your space. Members can open or close the door by pressing 'x'. If a Guest tries to interact with the door without a Member, they'll see the following message:
"Welcome! This is a door only members of the space can open. If you're here to see someone, find them in the right bar."
The Impassable Tiles (which prevent people from walking through the door before interacting with it) will start to work after the first time you open and close the door.
Add a Password Door
Password Doors require a password before they can be opened. This makes them another great option to place in the lobby of your office, or outside of an important meeting for an extra layer of security.
Anyone with any user role can interact with these doors as long as they have the password.
To add a Password Door to your space, follow these steps or keep reading for more detailed instructions:
- Enable the Password Doors Extension from the Mapmaker
- Open the Object Picker and select the Password Doors Extension category
- Choose the Door you want to use and place it in your space
- Walk up to the door to set the password

Walk up to the door to set the password
Admins in your space can set or edit the door's password. To do this, walk up to it and press 'x' to interact with the door. Click the Edit button.
In the Admin Settings of the Door, you can change the header and paragraph that displays in the modal and set the password.
There is currently no way to view the existing password on a door. To change it, simply enter a new password.
Anyone can press 'x' to interact with the door
Once your password is set, the door will only open if someone enters the correct password.
If the correct password is entered, the door will remain open for about 10 seconds before automatically closing (and requiring the password to be entered again).
If an incorrect password is entered, a small notification will show on the screen.
Door Tips and Best Practices
- Adding a door adds Impassible Tiles that become interactive. If you erase a door from the space, the impassible tiles will remain until deleted in the Mapmaker.
- Extensions may take up to 30 seconds to fully load, so if something doesn't quite work the first time, wait a bit and refresh your space!
- To update the information for password-protected doors, you must be an Admin of the space.
- If a guest is inside a password-protected area and closes Gather, if they return, they will respawn to the same spot within the password-protected area. We recommend walking them out to the lobby so they re-enter in the right spot.
