We hope you always have pleasant interactions with people on Gather, but just in case, we've built several moderation tools to help you feel safe and comfortable in your space.
There are four moderation tools you can use to control how others interact with you:
- Mute another person's audio or video feed
- Block someone from connecting with you
- Kick a user out of the space
- Ban a user from entering the space
To Mute, Block, Kick, or Ban another user in Gather, you must both be online and active in a space. If the other user is offline, you will not be able to perform these actions until they log in.
Mute
Muting someone in a Remote Office Space will mute them for everyone in the space.
Muting someone in a Conference Space will mute them only for you.
They'll be notified that they were muted, and can un-mute by clicking the microphone or video icon in the bottom navigation bar.
Muting is best used for temporarily turning off someone's audio or video. For example, if they walked away from their desk and their dogs are barking loudly during a meeting.
To mute someone, hover over their video feed and click the microphone or camera icon to disable their audio or video. You'll see a second window pop up to confirm you want to do this.
Block
Blocking someone will stop all audio/video connections between you and that person. It will not block that person from interacting with anyone else in the space, and you will still see the avatar of the person you've blocked; you just will not connect with their audio or video feed.
The person will not be notified that they have been blocked, and they will still be able to see and hear you. You will not be able to chat with them, bubble with them, or use the follow/request to lead feature.
To block someone, click on their avatar or name from the Participants Panel. Select the three dots in the top right corner and then select Block.
To unblock a person, select Unblock on their video feed. You can also select their name from the Participants Panel, and from the three dots on their info card, select Unblock.
Kick
You need to be an Admin or Moderator to be able to Kick someone from a space. You can view User Roles and Permissions here.
Kicking someone will remove them from the space and send them to the Check Your Hair screen. They can rejoin the space at any time. This feature is primarily used for removing inactive guests.
To kick someone, click on their avatar or name from the Participants Panel. Select the three dots in the top right corner and then select Kick from Space.
Ban
You need to be an Admin or Moderator to be able to Ban someone from a space. You can view User Roles and Permissions here.
Banning someone from a space will prevent them from accessing it at all. Bans are by user ID if the person is signed in to Gather, or by IP address if the person is not signed in.
If a banned user tries to access your space, they'll see a message letting them know they're banned: "You don't have access to [Space Name]"
To ban someone, click on their avatar or name from the Participants Panel. Select the three dots in the top right corner and then select Ban from Space. You'll be asked to confirm this action.
To unban a user (which will unban the entire IP address):
- Open the Main Menu (with the Gather logo) in the bottom navigation bar and click Settings
- Go to Space > Advanced > Space Dashboard
- From the Space Dashboard, select Banned Users
- Find the user you want to unban and click the trashcan icon or unban all users to reset the entire list.
