Gather is currently designed to support two different types of Spaces: Remote Work and Events. We design, test, and release features that are unique to these two Space types. This article describes:
Tip: You can easily tell what type of Space you are by checking for the info board icon (sign post) in the navigation bar. If you see an info board icon, you're in an Event Space. If you do not see this icon, you are in a Remote Work Space. Read more about features available in the navigation bar.
Choosing Your Space Type
The type of Space you have is determined in one of two ways: The option you choose at https://app.gather.town/get-started or the answer you select at https://app.gather.town/create.
Get Started
When you visit https://app.gather.town/get-started, you're presented with three different options: Set up a workspace, Organize an event, or Explore social experiences. If you choose Set up a workspace, you will create a Remote Work Space. If you choose Organize an event or Explore social experiences, you will create an Event Space.
You have three choices when you visit https://app.gather.town/get-started: Workspace, event, or social experience.
Create
When you visit https://app.gather.town/create, you can create a Space by picking one of our templates, copying one of your existing Spaces, or creating a blank Space. The Space type is determined by your answer to the question "What are you building this space for?" If you answer Remote Office, you will create a Remote Work Space. Any other answer will create an Event Space.
From https://app.gather.town/create, the answer to "What are you building this space for" determines your Space type.
Changing Your Space Type
Unfortunately, there is no quick way to change your Space type. If you want the same Space you have to change types, you'll need to create a copy of the Space and change the answer on "What are you building this Space for." To do that:
- Go to https://app.gather.town/create
- Select Copy from existing space.
- Choose the Space you want to copy.
- Answer "What are you building this space for?" and choose the answer that aligns with your desired Space type:
- Remote Work Space: Choose Remote Office.
- Event Space: Choose Event, Social Experience, Education, or Other.
Warning: You must an Admin or Builder to make a copy of a Space.
Head to https://app.gather.town/create and choose Copy from existing space. Then select the answer that aligns to your desired Space type for "What are you building this Space for?"
Differences Between Spaces
At Gather, we are constantly developing and testing new features to enhance your experience! We rely on A/B testing and partial roll-out of features to understand what works best for our users. These features are often not fully documented here in our help center based on their tendency to change. However, we want to provide a list and quick description of some of the features you may or may not see in your Space. Keep in mind that Remote Work and Event Spaces have unique features designed to meet the needs of each use case. The following is a list of features that appear in each use case.
Note: Many features are related to the type of Space you've made (events or remote work). Turning on Beta Features in your Space Settings does not guarantee access to these features.
