Connect Multiple 1.0 Spaces for a 500+ Person Event

If you're planning a large event on Gather 1.0 (500+ people), you'll need to create multiple spaces and link them together. This will improve performance for attendees and help you create a dynamic event space that guests can move through.

To Connect Spaces

You can use Portal Tiles to connect two spaces together.

1. Open the Mapmaker, select Tile Effects at the top, and choose Portal. 

2. Select the Space where you want the portal to go.

3. Place the Portal Tile on your Map and set the location it'll portal to. 

4. Add an object (like a door) on top of the Portal Tile. (Highly recommended)

Design Tips

1. Make each Space structurally a duplicate of the others

   1. Using the same floor layout will people quickly figure out where to go in each space

   2. Using the same objects will help people quickly figure out how to interact with the space. (For example, using the same video object to embed live streams of keynote speakers.)

2. Then use decorations to make each Space stylistically distinct, so there's no doubt which Space you are standing in.

3. In each space, include multiple breakout rooms and small conversation areas to encourage smaller group interactions.

4. Connect the Spaces using a Hub and Spokes model.

   • Use one Portal from each space to a Central Hub Space located in the same location on all maps. 

   • Make the Hub an interesting social space, but not essential to your event.

   • The Portal to the Central Hub will ideally be placed in a location where participants are least likely to go first.

5. When you place Portal Tiles to connect the two spaces, consider which direction people are walking. For example, if you leave one space through a door on the right, maybe you enter the new space through a door on the left.
